It never ceases to amaze me that people don't have any idea how nasty the American media used to be. Of course, "nasty" is derived from the cartoonist Thomas Nast who chewed up and spit out politicians with line drawings and invective.

There was nothing "fair and balanced" about 19th century journalists.

I still remember seeing a photo of a California publisher who drove around with a machine gun mounted on his car. He was colonel somebody, but obviously held strong views.
