The insurance companies lie. They lie about their losses due to actual claims, and they lie to their policy holders. These lies apply to all forms of insurance: property, malpractice, etc.

If you didn't need insurance to get a mortgage, there a lot of people who wouldn't bother after what has happened to to them. What's the point of insurance when they won't pay for your losses.
