Mustang Bobby

Happy belated birthday, Michael, and give my regards to Minneapolis. I spent two years there in grad school (Masters) in the mid-1970's, and it's a great city. My dad was born and raised there, and I have fond memories of visiting my grandparents who lived near Lake Harriet.

The one downside is that winter thing they've got going there. They do not mess around with it. I rememeber bright sunny days of -17F, and walking across the Washington Avenue bridge from the West Bank to a class on the East Bank was a religious experience.

Heh. I had a similar conversation last night with the Somali cabdriver who took me from my hotel (on the West Bank campus) to the rink. He didn't believe his friend who told him he needed to shop for some heavier clothes for the winter his first year here, so he said he was unable to go out for a couple of days after the first snowfall.

And if I'm feeling up to it, I'll be able to re-enact your walk. I'm at the Radisson University on the West Bank campus, but all the conference events are in the Union or the Nolte Center, both on the East Bank campus. Looks like all I have to do is turn right down Washington street and walk about a mile and a half.

Maybe I'll take a cab...
