So I've safely arrived in our nation's capital, and suddenly I have this overwhelming need to run my mouth off. Is this what happens to people once they land inside the Washington Beltway?
The flight was good, and I beat the crappy weather out of Chicago by half a day or so, which is a good thing. I'm concerned about one of my colleagues who wasn't able to get a flight out until tomorrow--she may hit trouble, if the weather's as bad as they say it might be. Having to get up at 3:45 a.m., on the other hand, I could've lived without. (Though I will say this much for early morning hours--there's hardly any traffic!)
So, a little groggy and lethargic, I have a bit of leisure time to play tourist before the conference starts tomorrow. I've got a 2:30 pass to the Holocaust Memorial Museum for this afternoon--not exactly light fare, no, but (a) I've been to Yad Vashem twice, so how much more depressing can it possibly be? (b) I specialize in Nazi Germany, so I already know what to expect, and (c) it wasn't even built yet the last time I was in D.C., back when the man for whom half of this city seems to have been renamed (including National Airport, which I will never refer to by its present name) was still actually president. The hotel is just up the road from the Mall, and I could see both the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian from 14th Street as the cab was bringing me up from the airport--so I may wander down and look around later.
For right now, a little blogging, a little checking of e-mail, a little relaxing, and maybe a spot of lunch, since breakfast was kinda skimpy and a while ago.
(including National Airport, which I will never refer to by its present name)
BRAVO!!! Spoken like a true resident of D.C.!

Well, when they changed the name, I swore I'd never fly into or out of that place. But when I had to make flight reservations for this trip, and found out that Dulles is like 30 miles away and BWI is even further than that, as opposed to a $15, 10-minute cab ride, I opted to save my boss (and the taxpayers of Illinois and the United States who pay my salary--and in this case, my expenses) a few bucks.
