As far as I'm concerned, spring started Monday morning when I nearly ran over a couple of low-flying robins on my way to work. Astronomically, it started yesterday. Meteorologically, it technically started a couple of weeks ago. But practically, it started today, with the first thunderstorm of the new year. (I'm not counting the thundersnow episode from one of the blizzards awhile back.)
We got quite a bit of rain overnight last night, on the order of half an inch. And then it rained, at times quite heavily, all day. With the ground already saturated from snowmelt and earlier rains, and the rivers and streams just barely getting back to normal after the spring thaw, that doesn't bode well for farmers trying to get the spring plowing done, or gardeners wanting to get the bulbs in before Easter is upon us.
What worries me, though, is the fact that our in-house meteorologist is calling for more heavy rain tonight and tomorrow, and then another shot sometime this weekend. Given that from my apartment to my office, no matter which way I go (except east, which is hugely out of my way), I have to cross the local river at least once, I'm getting a little anxious. Along my usual route to work, the river was out of its banks for most of last week, and looked like it was nearly up to the bottom of the little bridge I have to cross at least once. Driving home tomorrow night late after class could be an interesting exercise in navigation.
